Right off the bat, Adele (Kathryn Erbe)–the main character in Craig Lucas’ Ode to Joy, a Rattlestick Production at the Cherry Lane–screams out in pain. Moments later, Bill (Arliss Howard) prefaces his first speech by screaming out in pain. Mala (Roxanna Hope), the other character, doesn’t scream. She has a tendency, though, to collapse onto the floor. All three of them periodically collapse–splat!–over the course of two hours; even an off-stage character collapses. Otherwise it is an affair filled with booze, drugs, howls, a heart transplant, and the first instance I can recall where one actor clearly and visibly vomits into the mouth of another. Ah, stagecraft! Ms. Erbe, a long-time Steppenwolf member, has lately been gainfully employed in one of the precinct houses of the Law & Order franchise. Things were less messy there, violence-wise and dramaturgically.
Early on, we are told that Ode to Joy is “the story of how the pain goes away.” At the end they say “forgiving is giving up the option for revenge” and “true joy is acceptance.” In between there is talk of Jesus, Hitler, Elvis, the torturous breaking wheel of the Middle Age, and Auschwitz. So much beauty, and then that stinking rotting bullshit right down front and center. That’s a quote from playwright/director Lucas in the second act, not me.
*
Of considerably more interest is the Keen Company production of Paddy Chayefsky’s Middle of the Night at the Harold Clurman. This was early Chayefsky, his first Broadway play. (The Philco Television Playhouse presented Marty in May 1953 and Middle of the Night in September 1954. The film version of Marty was released in April 1955, followed by the stage version of Middle of the Night–which opened at the ANTA in February 1956, six weeks before Chayefsky won his Marty Oscar.)
Middle of the Night had a healthy run of 477 performances but has receded from memory and seems not to have ever been professionally revived in New York. This is no doubt due to the fact that it was a star vehicle, the star in question being Hollywood’s Edward G. Robinson returning to the stage after a quarter century. (Robinson appeared in almost thirty Broadway plays through 1930, including the original production of the Elmer Rice classic The Adding Machine.)
The Chayefsky play tells of an unlikely romance between a fifty-three-year old widower–a well-to-do, garment district type–and a twenty-four-year old secretary. (Nowadays fifty-year-olds are spring chickens, but in the 1950s they were considered old; all his friends are “dying, retired or in the hospital” he says.) The Manufacturer is likeable, sympathetic, and–like Chayefsky’s Marty–a decidedly unattractive candidate for romance. The Girl is young, naive, and trapped in an unhappy marriage. The pair tentatively feel their way forward, on the snowbound Upper West Side, from friendship to a marriage proposal. She proposes to him, initially, as he is too timid to suggest such a thing. All the while, they face protests from his sister (who considers the girl–whom she hasn’t met–to be a gold-digger) and her mother (who calls him a Sugar Daddy and, even worse, a Jew).
Robinson’s stature–and his apparent excellence in the role–marked this as a role suitable to him alone, in the same way that Marty has ever belonged to Ernest Borgnine. This might explain why the play disappeared after Robinson took it out on a six-month post-Broadway tour. Or it might have been that the 1959 film version–which opened up the plot, added soap-like complications and sex scenes, and was sculpted into a star vehicle for Kim Novak (post-Vertigo)–scuttled the play’s future.
Director Jonathan Silverstein and his Keen Company have unearthed Middle of the Night and given it an admirable if economical production. While it is not revealed to be quite as strong as other plays of the day like Cat on the Hot Tin Roof, Long Day’s Journey into Night and Bus Stop, Middle of the Night makes for an enjoyable domestic drama.
At the heart of things is the performance of Jonathan Hadary as the decent, likable and slightly depressed widower. Hadary, with a kind smile and an occasional tremor in his hand, walks as if he is encased in a protective shell of resignation. He at first politely offers The Girl (Nicole Lowrence) kindly encouragement; then he sits, then he removes his overcoat, then he leans forward with something approaching enthusiasm. In this one scene, we watch as his shell cracks and he becomes engaged–albeit without entertaining the prospects of a relationship. Hadary is terrific in the role, a joy to behold. (Robinson was 62 when he played the role; Hadary seems ages younger than Robinson, though he is 65.)
Ms. Lowrence does well as the young blonde, in a role originated by Gena Rowlands. Herein is what might be the flaw of the play: Chayefsky does not quite convince us that this girl would cling to this man. The rest of the cast is uniformly winning, especially Denise Lute, Melissa Miller and Todd Bartels as The Manufacturer’s sister, daughter and son-in-law. They share an explosive scene with Hadary at the end of the second of three acts, with all of them effectively firing away. (Bartels, who only has one scene as The Son-in-Law, stands out for his impassioned defense of The Manufacturer. He then switches to the role of The Girl’s jazz-playing husband.)
Director Silverstein keeps our attention firmly in hand and smoothly handles the necessary production economies, with doubling in four roles and one set necessarily serving as two different apartments. It all adds up to a surprisingly enjoyable evening of mid-century drama. Chayefsky and Hadary, over on Theatre Row, merit a visit.

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton may have separated, but he’s not giving up.
The former high school sweethearts were married for nearly nine years before announcing their split on Feb. 24, and Thicke isn’t ready to let Patton go. Sources told Us Weekly that the “Blurred Lines” singer wanted to save the marriage, but Patton made the choice to end it.
Those claims appear to be true, as TMZ caught up with Thicke as he arrived in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Feb. 27, telling a cameraman, “I’m just trying to get her back.”
According to the website, the couple’s marriage began to fall apart after Thicke’s sexually charged performance with Miley Cyrus at the MTV VMAs in August 2013. Sources say things soured because Patton felt “utterly disrespected” by the performance. And then came the cheating allegations.
While the pair reportedly remain cordial with one another, according to Us Weekly’s sources, Patton is “done with the marriage.”

The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.
The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.
SOMERSET, N.J. (AP) — Real estate developer Donald Trump told a group of New Jersey Republicans he expects New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to make it through the scandals that are plaguing his administration.
“He’s doing fine and it’s going to be fine,” Trump told the Somerset County Republican Organization, where he received the group’s “Republican of the Year” award Wednesday night. “We all go through these patches,” said Trump. “I wish him well.”
Trump said he has considered Christie a friend for many years. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, owns a publishing company that runs a website devoted to New Jersey politics.
The 67-year-old Trump told The Associated Press he’s seen no evidence that Republican donors are shying away from the governor and possible 2016 presidential candidate.
He says Christie’s ability to run for president has not been compromised, if he decides he wants to run.
Trump, who flirted with running for president in 2012, told AP he would decide within a few weeks whether to enter the race for governor of New York.
On Wednesday, he was honored for his investment in New Jersey; Trump National Country Club is located in Somerset County.
Former New Jersey Attorney General and Christie confidante Jeff Chiesa also was honored by the group.
Referencing Christie’s budget address on Tuesday and town hall meeting on Wednesday, Chiesa said Christie is continuing to govern despite twin scandals that have mired the start of his second term and threaten to upend any political ambitions.
“He has been the target of incessant and unsubstantiated innuendo for six weeks now, and guess what,” said Chiesa, “he is continuing to lead the state with incredible integrity.”
Federal authorities and state lawmakers are looking into an apparent political payback operation orchestrated Christie’s aides; federal prosecutors are also investigating accusations that two members of Christie’s cabinet threatened to withhold federal Superstorm Sandy recovery aid from hard-hit Hoboken unless the mayor supported a favored redevelopment project.
The administration has denied the charges.
Chiesa, who was named by Christie to a temporary seat in the U.S. Senate last year, is a partner in Wolff & Samson, the law firm that represented the redeveloper in Hoboken. David Samson, the founding partner of the law firm, is chairman of the agency that runs the George Washington Bridge, where traffic jams were created in an apparent act of political retribution.

Over the last few years, I’ve taken up summer surfing in a major way. For me, it’s an exhilarating and dangerous sport — and a spiritual experience.
It’s fun, but I still prefer my bikini.
It all began when my first company, Social Diva, hosted several day trips from NYC that involved yoga and surfing. We transported about 40 people to the beach, offered yoga on the sand and optional surf lessons for those who wanted them. I took a few of the lessons myself. During my first lesson, I managed to stand up on the first wave. My 17-year-old instructor was impressed.
“Are you sure you’ve never surfed before?” he asked. I was flattered by high praise from such a young, cool surfer. I said no, figuring I didn’t need to tell him about that one time when I was 17 myself.
The only thing I remember from that experience is that I immediately thought, This is not for me. I’ll stay and look good in my bikini on the beach instead.
Said differently, I enjoyed my lesson. I thought surfing was super fun, but I wasn’t hooked yet.
When I got hooked
But it seems the power of surfing is more of a sticky sport than I first realized. For example, during Social Diva’s event, one attendee came out of the water with a bloody knee.
“Wow, are you OK?” I asked.
“Oh my god,” she responded. “That was awesome!!!!”
I was amazed, but it wasn’t until two summers ago that I woke up one morning and realized I wanted to learn how to surf myself. When I asked a good friend who’s known for taking newcomers into the water to teach me, he offered to take me on the spot.
“Now?” I asked “OK! Let’s go!”
This time around, I wiped out on the first wave and hit my head. I hit it so hard that I needed to go into shore and take something called a “surfer’s cold shower.” The cold water made me scream, but it was partly from pleasure. I was so excited to be surfing!
The spiritual journey
As I continued surfing, I found paddling, getting up and riding a wave to be absolutely exhilarating. At times, wipeouts were easy. Other times, they were terrifying. A few times, while being tousled under water, I felt extreme fear that I was about to die.
Through it all, I experienced a lot of unexpected support from the guys in my life who also happen to surf. Every time something happened, they’d say, “Oh yeah, that’s happened to me.” That sense of community encouraged me to keep at it during those first few tries, and they still do.
Plus, every time I resurface above and the water, I get calm again. And I wonder why I bothered with fear at all.
Today, I surf often during the summer. The conditions can change daily or even hourly at the same surf spot, and I like that I keep going back, regardless. In a sense, I’m cultivating perseverance.
Plus, the entire experience is richly spiritual. There’s the beauty of the ocean, the sky, the beach. These surf spots, to me, are what heaven will feel like. Sitting on the board, whether I’m waiting for waves or resting, is a simple meditation.
Ultimately, surfing is a metaphor. Moving through the waves is like moving through life. Sometimes the waves are bigger than others, but you just keep on paddling — no matter if you just wiped out gently or pretty hard. Of course, the best moments are those when I catch a perfect ride and ride all the way to shore. It’s exhilarating, empowering and beautifully spiritual.
Surf’s up.

London in the middle of the 1800s was a subject endlessly sketched by artists, studied by social reformers, and discussed by writers. This comprehensive collection of drawings by Gustave Doré, France’s most celebrated graphic artist of the period, presents a panoramic portrait of that engrossing city — from fashionable ladies riding in a sunlit park to ragged wretches in a shadowy side street. Here are amazingly perceptive sketches of workaday London, busy market places, the Christy Minstrels, a waterman’s family, thieves gambling, the Devils’ Acre in Westminster, flower girls, waifs and strays, a wedding at the Abbey, provincials in search of lodgings, a garden party, prisoners in the Newgate exercise yard, stalls at Covent Garden Opera House, and many other scenes that capture the London of a bygone era.

World-renowned violinist, Cho-Liang Lin, Professor of Violin at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, urges all young musicians “to get up in front of people and perform.”
And The Shepherd School Orchestra did – magnificently! Led by their charismatic conductor, Larry Rachleff, the orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut Tuesday evening, February 18 with energy, artistry and a very distinctive Shepherd sound.
Founded in 1975, The Shepherd School of Music in Houston is widely recognized as one of the nation’s most elite music institutions. The school emphasizes a performance-based curriculum. “I think what’s unique about the Shepherd School is that musicians are given a lot of opportunities to learn in front of an audience and that’s very important when it comes to building self-confidence,” explains student violinist Niccolo Muti.
The performance at Carnegie Hall kicked off with Hector Berlioz’ Le Corsaire followed by American Composer Christopher Rouse’s Violin Concerto featuring a remarkable solo performance by Cho-Liang Lin. The score to this complex and beautiful work was actually composed for Cho-Liang Lin in 1991. The principal orchestral work of the evening was Bela Bartok’s magnificent Concerto for Orchestra featuring numerous solos from the ensemble, giving many of the 103 extraordinarily gifted young musicians the opportunity to shine.
Beyond the dream of all accomplished musicians, which is to perform in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, there are the numerous additional benefits and skills that a music education at this level of the art form can offer students. “Performers achieve incredible levels of coordination and dexterity while simultaneously channeling the deepest emotional expressions of the music. How can this not be of benefit to all studies,” observes professional artist and faculty member, Jon Kimura Parker.
I had the opportunity to chat further with Cho-Liang Lin and Jon Kimura Parker along with students Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille (trombonist), Titus Underwood (oboist), Anatasia Sukhopara (violinist) and Niccolo Muti (violinist).
You are both veterans of the international concert stage as well as committed educators. What do you think are the most important skills that a young artist must have to be successful in the professional world of music today?
Cho-Liang Lin: Classical music is such an exacting discipline. It takes years of practicing, single-minded training and hours of lessons. Then one enters the real world where competition is stiff and judgment of one’s talent and thus future career can be decided in one single performance or audition. Therefore, apart from talent, a young artist must have the ability to convey artistry, emotion and a real sense of beauty to the audience. This requires natural ability, confidence, clear-minded thinking and lots of experience. By experience, I mean knowing what to do on stage under pressure. This cannot be learned in a practice room. It must be learned by being on stage in front of an audience.
Jon Kimura Parker: I believe that young artists have to understand themselves and to be able to communicate effectively. Forty years ago, it was not remarkable to ask of our audience that they would disconnect from the external world and focus on a 40-minute work. Nowadays, we are stretching the attention span of many. I love to see a young artist be able to engage people around them; to inspire others to discover the incredible joy of great music.
What real world life skills do you believe an educated musician can use in other pursuits?
Cho-Liang Lin: In a word: Passion. I am passionate about music. Nothing is more rewarding than to listen or play a great work. Passion for something one holds dear is very important. Beethoven, Tom Edison, Steve Jobs, Michelangelo, Goethe, Jonas Salk, and Lincoln all had passion. Believe in something one loves and pursue that something to the fullest.
Jon Kimura Parker: Musicians aren’t just creating music; they are also great listeners. An educated musician typically has a highly developed sense of the beauty of mathematics and structure, an endless curiosity, and a deep connection with the humanities. These skills have taken musicians in many different directions.
What real world life skills (other than music) did you gain from your education at the Shepherd School of Music? Do you think music helped you with your other academic studies at Rice?
Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: Absolutely! Learning music gives you a lot of skills that are precious in life. One important example is discipline! To learn an instrument requires constant effort. You learn that with perseverance you can achieve your dream. And learning to persevere applies to everything in life.
Anastasia Sukhopara: I think gratitude and discipline are some of the most important life skills. The dedication to music and to the highest standards of excellence that are required at the Shepherd School are a priceless life lesson. Settling for nothing but the best is really a critical skill, in music and life alike.
Titus Underwood: I have gained a deeper appreciation for artistry among my young colleagues.
Niccolo Muti: You can be as passionate as you want to be about something but if you don’t put in the work it won’t help you succeed.
So, what advice would you give to freshman musicians coming to the Shepherd School of Music?
Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: Take every opportunity you can to learn and push yourself farther in your musical development! Shepherd school is such a rich musical environment. There are incredible faculty, talented students and so many opportunities. It’s the best time and the best environment to improve yourself and become a better musician!
Titus Underwood: Stay confident in your abilities but always humble in your ethics.
Anastasia Sukhopara: Know what you want, work hard and be patient!
Niccolo Muti: You are going to get a lot of opportunities to perform at the Shepherd School and performance experience is the most important thing when it comes to building self-confidence.
A lot of professional musicians both teach and perform at your school – what’s it like to be learning from artists/teachers such as Renee Fleming, Jon Kimura Parker and Cho-Liang Lin?
Madeleine Doyon-Robitaille: It’s fantastic that Shepherd School gives us these opportunities. It’s been an incredible experience to have the chance to play for those professional musicians! It’s always been really inspiring even when it was not my specific instrument.
Niccolo Muti: Renee Fleming gave a master class at the Shepherd School. She told us that she is still constantly learning and working at her craft. It made me realize that musicians are all human, that is, we all have issues and things we want to improve but we also have the same goal, and that is to be the best we can be at what we do.

All it took was a purple polo and gray bow tie for Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) to make a big wardrobe change.
Polis donned the questionable combo while speaking on the House floor Tuesday, sparking a spirited set of opinions from GQ writer Dennis Tang.
“Worst ever?” Tang asked. “Yeah, right, how bad could it possiblyyyyyeeesh, okay, yeah, now that I look at it. Definitely. Is that a purple golf polo? With a bow tie?”
Polis took the criticism in stride, accepting the magazine’s offer.
Thank you @GQMagazine @GQFashion for the offer to help… I accept and am looking forward to the consultation!!
