LOS ANGELES (AP) — Julia Collins can count another “Jeopardy!” victory and another milestone.
The TV game show said Collins won her 20th game Friday, putting her alone in second place for most consecutive non-tournament victories. When she scored her 19th win on Thursday, she was in a second-place tie with season 22 contestant David Madden.
The top “Jeopardy!” player is Ken Jennings, who won 74 straight games in season 21 for a total of $ 2.5 million in prize money.
The 31-year-old Collins already has set a record as the winningest female “Jeopardy!” contestant ever, both in money and number of games.
A business consultant from the Chicago area, Collins had raked in $ 428,100 as of Friday. She’ll be back on the pre-taped show Monday as she bids for win No. 21.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the anticipation of an event — a weeklong vacation to the beach, a long-overdue visit from a dear friend, a wedding — feels even more enjoyable than the event itself? For days, weeks or months, the excitement builds; then, when the big day arrives, your happiness level doesn’t skyrocket any more than it already has.
Happiness researcher Shawn Achor has studied how to foster happiness and has seen the powerful effects of this type of anticipation. He shares some of his findings on an episode of Oprah’s “Super Soul Sunday.”
“One of the things we found that’s so powerful for creating happiness in the present is actually the anticipation of something good that’s happening in the future,” he says. “We know that people actually enjoy vacations more before the vacation than actually on the vacation. The reason for that is because you’re anticipating it.”
Achor suggests using this concept in a simple exercise to multiply the effect of that positivity.
“Think about something you’re really looking forward to and then, in your brain, visualize every detail of that experience,” he says. “Try to live it, because our brain can’t tell much difference between visualization and actual experience.”
The result, Achor says, is momentous. “You’re literally doubling the positive effect upon your life, causing you to not only feel it when it happens, but helping you to feel it now,” he explains. “So, that positive event can be shaping the way you wake up in the morning, the way you interact with your kids, the way that you interact with strangers on the street.”
Shawn Achor and Oprah continue their discussion on happiness this weekend on “Super Soul Sunday,” airing June 1 on OWN at 11 a.m. ET, during which it also streams worldwide on Oprah.com, Facebook.com/owntv and http://ift.tt/18mhN9o.

Hang on. Lina and Mindaugas had such a sexily gorgeous wedding in Kaunas, Lithuania, that I’m still fanning myself. The couple own a yoga studio together, so let’s start with how hot that is. Then let’s examine the bad-assery of getting matching wedding-ring tattoos. Next, let’s take into consideration how stunning the two-part ceremony was: Lina and Mindaugas exchanged vows both outdoors at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers and inside a Gothic church. St. George’s Church is still undergoing restoration (building is OLD, y’all), but you’d never be able to tell from these airy, light-filled photos.

A popular show business axiom insists that “Dying is easy, comedy is hard.” While any performer who has bombed onstage will quickly acknowledge this bitter truth, the bottom line is that comedy depends on good ideas and solid execution. Mary Elizabeth Williams makes this point brilliantly in her article for Salon.com entitled Stephen Colbert is Dead, Long Live Stephen Colbert!
During one recent week I attended performances of three very different comedies.
Suppose you want to write a play that tackles a difficult and extremely newsworthy issue. How can you position it dramatically in an easily understandable setting for a contemporary audience? In the following video, Tony Taccone explains how he and Dan Hoyle teamed up to write Game On for the San Jose Repertory Theatre.
Written for a cast of five (who perform on a unit set), the protagonists of Game On are two impassioned losers whose fanatic devotion to fantasy baseball helps to distract them from the sadder and more distressing realities of their lives.

In a way, Vinnie and Alvin are not that different from Max Bialystock and Leopold Bloom in The Producers . Both are small-time idealists who are completely out of their league trying to raise money to support their dreams. If only someone with megabucks to spare would taste some of Vinnie’s fresh, worm-laden spring rolls or fried crickets, Vinnie is sure that the dipping sauce alone could convince that person to write a check!
As the play opens, Alvin and Vinnie are in the television room of an upscale home in Los Altos, which is close to Silicon Valley’s deep pool of venture capital. As they eagerly await some precious face time with a Godot-like mogul (who has an expressed interest in “green” projects), they argue about baseball players and fundraising strategies. It soon becomes obvious that, while Vinnie is a man of deep passions, Alvin is a rabid control freak.
Craig Marker and Marco Barricelli in Game On
The hard truth is that neither Alvin nor Vinnie is equipped to go swimming with the venture capital sharks of Silicon Valley. Alvin, in particular, is so wrapped up in numbers and the “rules of the game” that he misses important body language cues and important “tells” dropped by those who step into the game room. They include:
Craig Marker, Cassidy Brown, and Marco Barricelli in Game On
Hoyle and Taccone have fashioned a script which covers a lot of topical issues while delivering a steady supply of laughs to the audience. Their play is nicely structured, with plenty of unexpected twists and turns. Working on John Iacovelli’s stylish unit set, Rick Lombardo has directed with a sure hand (San Jose Rep’s impressive study guide for students attending performances of Game On includes a wealth of material on such topics as global warming, food and sustainability, entomophagy, fantasy baseball, sabermetrics, how to fund a startup, and whether or not to seek venture capital).
While Craig Marker has developed a reputation for delivering solidly-crafted characterizations, Alvin’s spectacular emotional meltdown allows him to show audiences what an impressively layered artist he can be with the right material. Game On gives Marco Barricelli a much stronger opportunity to show his strengths than he received from A.C.T.’s recent production of Eduardo De Filippo’s Napoli.
In supporting roles, Mike Ryan offered an appropriately bland Bob while Cassidy Brown enjoyed some deliriously comic flame-outs as Glen. In her limited time onstage, Nisi Sturgis had no trouble communicating to the audience that Beth was much more shrewd and savvy than any of the men in Game On.
As in Game On, the dialogue in Wittenberg (which recently received its Bay area premiere at the Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley) fairly crackles. That may well be because playwright David Davalos is also an actor. Davalos first got the idea for his play in 1991, while appearing as Rosenkrantz in a Utah Shakespeare Festival production of Hamlet. As the playwright notes:
“The theatre I enjoy best as an audience member (Shakespeare, Shaw, Stoppard) also challenges and provokes me, be it emotionally or intellectually. To an Elizabethan audience, a reference to Wittenberg both identified a person there as Protestant and as someone immersed in an academic environment of intellectual foment and questioning — as if an American Hamlet in the 1960s were identified as coming home from Berkeley or Kent State. In many respects, I reverse-engineered Hamlet’s psychology from the moment in Hamlet when he’s just about to stab a praying Claudius but second-guesses himself. I wanted to suggest that Hamlet’s internal moral conflict pre-dated Hamlet.”
Jeremy Kahn as Hamlet in Wittenberg (Photo by: David Allen)
It’s an interesting dramatic trick, made all the more accessible by Tom Stoppard’s breakthrough success with 1966′s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Billed as “A Tragical-Comical-Historical in Two Acts,” Davalos’s play (which premiered at the Arden Theatre Company in Philadelphia in 2008) takes place in October 1517 as Hamlet (Jeremy Kahn) is still struggling to decide whether to major in philosophy or theology (like some of his classmates, he’s also been hanging out at the Bunghole Tavern).
Two of the university’s most noteworthy professors, Dr. Faustus (Michael Stevenson) and Martin Luther (Dan Hiatt) are vying for the attention of the Danish prince who, as a senior, is due to graduate as part of Wittenberg’s class of 1518. However, Hamlet recently spent a summer in Poland, where he was exposed to the dangerous astronomical theories of Nicolaus Kopernik claiming that the sun (rather than the earth) is the center of the universe.

Hamlet is under no great pressure to make up his mind. His ability to win at sports (due in large part to the referee’s deference) allows him to enjoy his royal status on the tennis court as well as in the classroom. Ironically, Hamlet is not the only one facing some difficult decisions.

There was so much to admire in the Aurora Theatre Company’s production of Wittenberg. From Eric Sinkkonen’s intriguing unit set to Maggi Yule’s handsome period costumes; from Josh Costello’s clever stage direction to the work of his finely-tuned four-actor ensemble, this play glows with the kind of intelligence, wit, precognition, and mischievous cross-referencing that could give a puzzle fanatic like Stephen Sondheim an erection.
It’s rare to leave a theatre thinking how much you’d like to get your hands on a copy of the script so that you could slowly savor all the puns, comedic setups, and insider jokes that Davalos has so intricately woven into Wittenberg. While one doesn’t need a thorough knowledge of Hamlet, Dr. Faustus, or Martin Luther’s life to enjoy this play, the stronger one’s sense of history and literature, the more fun a person will have at any performance of Wittenberg.

In 1981, Joe Sears and Jaston Williams introduced audiences in Austin, Texas to the citizens of Greater Tuna. The Greater Tuna franchise grew over the years because of the small-town charm of its characters and the dexterity with which Sears and Williams handled quick costume changes as they jumped from one character to another. Unfortunately, the last time I saw them perform one of their plays the thrill was gone, the script was weak, and the performers seemed to be navigating on autopilot.

In 1982, Michael Frayn’s backstage farce about everything that could possibly go wrong in a stage production (Noises Off) premiered in London and became a popular hit. Although the show has enjoyed numerous revivals, it failed to make a successful transition to the silver screen in 1992 when Peter Bogdonavich directed a cast that included Carol Burnett, Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, and Marilu Henner. The verdict was that Noises Off was too much of a live theatre experience to work as a film.
In September 1984, the Ridiculous Theatrical Company presented the world premiere of Charles Ludlam’s deliciously zany spoof, The Mystery of Irma Vep, with Ludlam and his partner (Everett Quinton) entertaining their audience with wacky costume/character changes and a surprise ending. According to Wikipedia, in 1991 Irma Vep was the most produced play in the United States.
Everett Quinton and Charles Ludlam in
1984′s The Mystery of Irma Vep
In June of 2005, Patrick Barlow’s hilarious adaptation of a popular 1935 film premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. Its director, Fiona Buffini, had four actors recreating Alfred Hitchcock’s screen adventure, The 39 Steps, as they jumped through lighting-fast costume changes and a dizzying array of characters in a highly-stylized and monstrously inventive stage production.
Some comedic tricks hit their mark and never fail to please. Others lose their sting after their first time up at bat. The urge to cherry pick the best qualities of past comedic successes and merge them into a new (yet old-fashioned) mashup can be irresistible. But there are times when resistance is definitely called for.
It’s understandable that a creative team might hope to merge the best elements of shows like Noises Off and The 39 Steps in order to capture the kind of comic gold and commercial success that each of those stage comedies achieved on its own. But lightning doesn’t always strike in the same place, in the same way, and with the same force, as Steven Suskin admirably explains in his Huffington Post review of Bullets Over Broadway (Aisle View: Don’t Speak! Don’t Sing!) while meticulously describing how a structural quirk in the new musical continually sabotages the show’s comedic momentum.

Created in 2007 by Steve Canny and John Nicholson for a small British theatrical company named Peepolykus, a comic adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1901 Sherlock Holmes novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, became a sizable hit in Great Britain. It has since delighted audiences in numerous cities.
What happens when the intended comedic magic fails to materialize onstage? When a fierce farce feels forced, fertile fun flees a futile fantasy. Instead of the audience feeling like they’re feasting on fresh fruit, its faith flutters in fear of failure as it feeds on a fallen souffle filled with flaccid shtick.
Get it? Got it? Good!

That pretty much sums up the energetic (but lame) performance of The Hound of the Baskervilles that I saw down at TheatreWorks (which fully deserved to be subtitled “This Turd Won’t Hunt”). Darren Bridgett, Michael Gene Sullivan, and Ron Campbell (who spent several years as one of Cirque du Soleil’s leading clowns) are all accomplished performers who were working hard onstage.
What could possibly have gone wrong? Several hunches pin the blame in surprising places:

Ironically, the experience awakened long-buried memories of a dreary Broadway musical entitled Baker Street, which opened on Broadway in February 1965 and whose exquisite sets (designed by Oliver Smith) were far more impressive than the show’s book, score, or Hal Prince’s stage direction. Although the cast was headed by such theatrical stalwarts as Fritz Weaver (Sherlock Holmes), Martin Gabel (Professor Moriarty), and Inga Swenson (playing a stage actress named Irene Adler), Baker Street is rarely, if ever performed. Consigned to oblivion, it offers a tiny footnote to the history of the Great White Way as the show that marked the Broadway debuts (in small supporting roles) of Tommy Tune and Christopher Walken.

There had been other ‘fad’ guitars during rock ‘n’ roll’s earlier years.
In the early 1960s, the brief but crazy-popular Surf Instrumental era, Fender Stratocasters, Jazzmasters and Jaguars were essentially the three models played on about 97 percent of those wonderful reverb-drenched California guitars-only sonic extravaganzas.
When the British Invasion hit, it was George Harrison’s Rickenbacker 12-string’s debut in Hard Day’s Night that knocked Fenders (who had started to seem square having been so identified with the now fading Surf Sound) out of the Must Have classification. It was, for a brief time in my life, my single most coveted inanimate object. Pete Townshend destroying a Ric-12 on Shindig in mid-1966 destroyed me.
Soon enough though, Fender was to have its revenge.
The first truly wild-technique guitarist out of England, Jeff Beck in The Yardbirds, was seen on that there Shindig show playing (for the time) psycho-futuristic lead guitar on a Fender Esquire, that being a budget version of Fender’s famous Telecaster (think Broooooce). Within about 6 months, Fender Telecasters and Esquires were The Bomb. Every single band on any and every TV show had at least one guy playing a creamy blond Telecaster. Within a year, this guitar’s popularity had eclipsed every model and fad before it. It was REQUIRED that you own a blond Telecaster. The secret we all found out within months of owning them (I got mine for Christmas, 1966) was that they were/are brutally unforgiving guitars. Telecasters inherently fight the player and consequently deliver that unique snapping tone (think Brad Paisley). As much of a bitch as they were to master, The Must Have Tele Craze lasted almost two years.
But, in the middle of 1967, Mike Bloomfield in the Paul Butterfield Blues band single-handedly turned the Gibson Les Paul guitar into The One To Own. As I pontificated in a recent column here, Bloomfield was truly the first Guitar Hero Gun Slinger for baby boomer guitarists. His playing was on a totally other plane from everyone at the time. He tore heroes like Keith Richards and George Harrison new ones.
Although I’d seen the gorgeous sunburst version of the Gibson Les Paul when both Stones’ Keef and Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian appeared on TV with them, no one else ever showed up with one and that model faded from our little minds [within a year, the sunburst models of 1958 - 1960 would become and remain The Holy Grail].
On the other hand, Mike Bloomfield’s beat up “Goldtop” Les Paul knocked my and everyone else’s pick in the dirt. Within a month it seemed, the early 1950s gold Les Pauls were the most in demand In-The-Know guitar. What we all found out very quickly and rudely was that unlike all the previous Fetish Guitars, Les Pauls were discontinued models! For the first time, you could not just walk into a music store and buy one. You had to HUNT… ONE… DOWN!
And this time, the “fad” was not based on image or flavor-of-the-month status. Serious players were discovering that Les Pauls made in the 1950s by Gibson were actually the best sounding and playing solid body guitars ever made. This was now (and forever, it turned out) the Mack Daddy of all Fetish Axes.
Naturally, I got bit bad. Real bad! Had to have one. HAD TO! HAD TO! HAD TO!
One day, I got ahold of a copy of “Rock Special” edition of Look Magazine. Among the excellent b & w photos (Avedon, I believe) was a shot of the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia was holding something I’d never seen before… a BLACK Les Paul. My God, it looked like a gold one wearing a tux. It was instantly my favorite guitar on Earth.
In my mid-teens, I was a (genteel) hoodlum kid who cut school all the time to go to West 48th St, in the 1960s, music store Mecca. Manny’s was the King Store out of the dozen or so located on the one block of W. 48th St between 6th and 7th Avenues.
I walked into Manny’s late one afternoon (probably for the 100th time) and head-salesman, Manny’s son, Henry, almost a second father to me by this point, had gotten a hold of a (GASP!) 1956 black Les Paul Custom… The King of Electrics at that moment… and not just in my scrambled little head. I’d never even seen one in person before.
Oh My God!
Across the area where you’d rest your right arm as you played it, Henry had stuck a 6 inch strip of extra-wide masking tape and had crudely written on it, “NOT FOR SALE.”
I flipped.
“Please, Henry, oh, please please please sell it to me. I’ll trade you back the Telecaster and the Ampeg amp and I’ll get my father to loan me some money and…”
“Binky, stop! Listen to me! This whole Les Paul business is ridiculous. Nonsense! I’m telling you, they are no big deal. I’m not gonna sell it to anyone, okay, Binky. I’m just gonna keep in it in that glass case and make all you fools drool!”
Classic Henry, actually!
Regardless, I dashed home and talked to my Dad for over an hour and wore him down to the point where he said, “Okay, okay, go back to Henry and see how much cash he’s gonna want on top of your guitar and amp…”
The next morning, cutting the entire day of junior high, I jumped on the subway in Brooklyn and got to Manny’s less than half an hour after they opened. I ran to the back area. Henry and Billy (the other guitar salesman, a truly swingin’ suave Sammy Davis Jr.-type ultra-cool jazz-playing black guy… Billy and I became good friends, but, it took me about 5 years to prove myself worthy of his respect and friendship) were having coffee and bagels.
“Henry, I talked to my father and he’s willing to… Oh, crap!! WHERE’S THE LES PAUL, Henry?!? My Dad will lend me the money!”
“Oh, ferchrissake, Binky… about an hour after you left, Jimi Hendrix walked in and demanded that I sell it to him. You know I can never say no to Jimi. Sorry, Bink.”
If you ever see a photo of Jimi playing an upside down black Les Paul… especially if it has that strip of masking tape on it (Jimi wittily kept it on the guitar for awhile) that was supposed to be mine, dammit!
PS Should you want to read about the Les Paul I DID buy four years later…
http://ift.tt/1tYDhm2
Small caveat… Since I wrote this story, I found out my Les Paul was made in 1959.
Shucks, huh!

Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza (born 1933) is one of the most influential architects of the past half-century. His most famous work is perhaps the Serralves Museum in his hometown of Porto, his second museum building, following the Galician Center for Contemporary Art, erected in 1997. Low built and horizontal in axis, its white stucco walls are perforated with occasional openings that yield unexpected views of a surrounding garden. As with most of Siza''s buildings, the furniture and fittings were also designed by the architect, including lighting fixtures, handrails, doorknobs and all signage. Building materials include hardwood floors and painted walls in gesso with marble skirting in the exhibition halls and marble floors in the foyers. This volume, published in Poligrafa''s innovative Museum Building series, reviews the Serralves Museum, a disarmingly intimate space in pronounced contradistinction to much recent museum architecture.

With all the hype surrounding the Kimye wedding, it’s hard to believe that anything else is going on with the Kardashian-Jenner clan at the moment.
It turns out, however, that is not the case. On the contrary, it’s been a pretty huge week for Kendall Jenner, too. Kris Jenner took to Instagram Wednesday with a sneak peek of her 18-year-old daughter’s spread in the upcoming issue of Vogue Paris, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier. Captioned “PARIS VOGUE June/July 2014 Wow @kendalljenner stunning!! Congratulations!! #proudmama,” Jenner is obviously ecstatic over the news. And we have to admit, she looks absolutely gorgeous in the photos.
This has been a whirlwind year for Kendall, who has already walked the runways at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks and starred in her own Vogue US selfie-inspired spread back in February.
What do you think of Kendall’s latest foray into high fashion? Sound off below!

One of the natural consequences of having the ability to imagine is also having the skills to use our imaginations to conjure up sexual fantasies. But, just because we can think them up, doesn’t mean we’re comfortable talking about them, or further still, acting them out. With help from researchers, sex therapists and authors of sexual fantasy novels, in “Part 1 of The Psychology of Sexual Fantasy,” we “normalized” the sexual fantasy, presenting information that showed how “popular” sexual fantasies are. The goal — to make “the talking about it” piece easier. The next step is to explore whether these sexual fantasies we have should be turned into reality.
First and foremost, acting out a sexual fantasy can be positive if both partners are willing participants. “When desires are expressed and acted on, as long as it is completely consensual, sexual fantasy is a good thing,” says Frederick Muench, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology at Columbia University Medical Center.
Meghan Laslocky, author of The Little Book of Heartbreak: Love Gone Wrong Through the Ages , agrees. “Those in long-term monogamous relationships can invigorate their relationships by acting out a sexual fantasy.”
“I wrote Cuba After Dark because I want to talk about the paradox of being human,” says Brian White, a debut novelist. “We want adventure while at the same time we want and need security in monogamous relationships.”
In her book, Mating in Captivity , Esther Perel asks, “Why is the forbidden so erotic?” She explains that as humans, men and women have a need for security, predictability, safety, dependability, reliability and permanence. “But we also have an equally strong need … for adventure, for novelty, for risk, for danger, for the unknown, for the unexpected,” said Perel in a recent TED Talk.
Fascinated by Perel’s research, the psychology of sexual fantasy and specifically the “acting out” of a sexual fantasy, White said he contemplated just how far one partner should go to fulfill the other’s sexual fantasy? “I often wondered if the consequence of taking action on a sexual fantasy would be more severely damaging than not taking that action,” says White. “That thought turned into Cuba After Dark, a cautionary tale about what happens when one partner wants to push the boundaries of sexuality and the other does not.” White says his book asks an important question: how much can we really ask of the person we love?
“Fantasy plays a role,” says Meunch. “Figuring out which fantasies should be acted on and which ones are just impulsive desires that should remain fantasies is very important because turning a sexual fantasy into a reality is quite different than just having a fantasy.”
Furthermore, not all fantasies should be acted on because quite often, “the fantasy is not about the content of the fantasy, but rather the meaning behind the fantasy,” says NYC sex and relationship expert, Megan Fleming. “When discussing fantasies with our partner, we get caught up in the content. But a sexual fantasy is not always about the content. It can be about what’s underneath it, the longing, what need is going to be met through the sexual fantasy, what would be satisfying about that sexual fantasy. Again, sometimes it’s even about what it feels like to express that need out loud. The sexual fantasy can represent more than just the immediate.”
“It’s a conversation piece,” says White, whose book, a fictional account of sexual fantasy, is supported by his blog, which takes a look at the intellectual side of sexual fantasy while exploring the current research.
That research includes the question of consequence.
White’s Cuba After Dark focuses in on one of the same questions posed by the authors of The Normal Bar: The Surprising Secrets of Happy Couples and What They Reveal About Creating a New Normal in Your Relationship — that of consequences. In their study, Chrisanna Northrup and Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D., who along with James Witte, Ph.D., penned the best selling book, asked, “If you had the opportunity to have sex with anybody you wanted outside your current relationship and it would have zero effect on your current relationship or family, as if it never happened, would you do it?” Of the results, Northrup says, “Wow, did we tap into some randy fantasy. Forty-three percent of women and 65 percent of men say yes, they’d do it! That means two thirds of men (a pretty huge percentage) and just under half of women (not a shabby number either) found this a compelling proposition. To us, it seems that there is a secret longing for sexual adventure and romance… even if we don’t act on it,” concludes Northrup.
But, when you do act on it, “escaping into a sexual fantasy can be a dangerous escape,” says Meghan Laslocky.
“When you go outside the relationship to act out on a fantasy, that’s where it threatens that relationship,” says Muench.
That said, there can also be consequences if you don’t act out one partner’s fantasy. “It’s one of the things I explored in my book and I discuss in my blog,” says White. “The partner whose fantasy is not being fulfilled may choose to leave the relationship and go out on his/her own to find it.”
Yet, sexual fantasy can be part of an individual’s personal journey.
“I am often mistaken for writing straight erotica,” says Shayla Black, a sexual fantasy writer, Shayla Black, who has written more than three-dozen erotic romances, including her most recent, Their Virgin Secretary Masters of Ménage, Book 6 . My books are really about, “One person’s journey through sexual expression and adventure. I write about the journey of two people (or three, however many are in the relationship) to find their happiness. Everything boils down to people, their conflicts, what they have to learn, how they have to grow to be the happy person they want to be.”
“You should be willing to take some risks in life,” says the author of Cuba After Dark. “But, every marriage and relationship is different. Sexual exploration can go many different ways. Therefore, discussion is very important. My book is about a happily married couple exploring sexual fantasy together as part of a 40th-birthday celebration. The husband and wife protagonists begin by exploring together, but the husband’s desire for more leads him off the rails. Sex is important in a relationship and there is nothing wrong with that, but there can be consequences to our actions,” concludes White.
You can continue the conversation about the #sexualfantasy on Twitter:

I have learned never to say “I’ve seen it all” or to claim there’s nothing left that could surprise me in wedding planning. Just when I think there’s nothing left that could shock me, something whacky happens (like the bride’s father stripping down to his skivvies) and I’m wrong yet again. So I’ve given up claiming that I know everything that can happen at a wedding. I don’t. Even after eight years and almost 500 weddings, things shock and horrify me regularly.
Here are 10 things it’s hard to believe were happening at weddings I’ve planned — but they really did (and I have the PTWD (Post Traumatic Wedding Disorder) to prove it):
1. The grandfather of the bride physically attacking the father of the bride during cocktails just after the happy couple made their grand entrance. OMG – shocking! And Gramps got a good lick in and drew blood, so he had to leave before the wedding reception dinner. Otherwise, he would have been escorted out by security anyway. Always have a plan for when a fight breaks out between guests — but just hope it’s not the family members attacking each other.
2. The groom arriving 30 minutes late for his own wedding ceremony, dressed in shredded cutoffs, and then standing on a rock like the Karate Kid, balanced on one leg, throwing stones into the Caribbean Sea while all the guests watched from a distance thinking he’d lost his mind. Eventually, when I asked what he was doing, he replied “getting rid of the bad energy.” Um buddy, you’re making the bride sit in a car waiting for you to put your pants on. That’s called creating bad karma, not relieving it.
3. Two grooms were upset with the way the place cards had been set up on their head table. The problem was they hadn’t followed our chart — they’d created their own and the staff couldn’t follow it. We fixed the problem before the guests were seated for dinner, but the grooms were too drunk to care. They screamed and yelled at me every chance they got. Icing on the cake — when the toasts were finished and I handed them the microphone to thank their guests, they actually used that time to publicly eviscerate me to their 60-plus guests who had just spent three lovely days enjoying the events my company planned. It was humiliating, and yes, the guests (and their families) apologized for the grooms’ behavior. Perfect wedding otherwise but we never heard from them again. I think they were mortified when they sobered up.
4. Beautifully executed wedding for a Chicago couple with Mexican origins. After dinner, during the toasts, the Best Man got up and began toasting dead gang members and pouring shots on the ground in memory of/honor of “Vatos Locos.” Um, haven’t I heard of them in way too many FBI wanted file stories? Scary. You never know who your clients really are until they arrive at a destination wedding.
5. A bridesmaid (and cousin of the bride) who was recently out of rehab took ALL of her Methadone on the first night of a five-day wedding weekend and freaked out. She called the police for an escort to the ferry (she thought she was in danger) and holed up in posh hotel on the big island with her much older boyfriend and the stash of drugs she’d obtained between the ferry and the resort. Unfortunately, she took her bridesmaid dress with her. I had to hunt it down, threatened to send the police to her hotel room (I knew she had drugs from her voice), and arranged to have the dress flown back to Vieques Island for another girlfriend to wear within a few hours of the wedding. Not easy. Not fun. But we did it. Be prepared to capture the wedding attire if a wedding party member makes a run for it!
6. The Best Man forgot the groom’s suitcase on the ferry dock on the main island — the same suitcase that contained the wedding rings AND the bride’s engagement ring. Say what? NEVER EVER pack your rings. And the engagement ring belongs on the bride. The worst part was the drunk Best Man (a US Marine officer, I might add) didn’t know where he left it — on the dock, in the taxi, on the ferry — not a clue. I used my position as police community liaison to work with an Agente in the Policia de Puerto Rico to track the bag and find it in the Customs holding area on the other island where it had been stowed after being abandoned. I can’t believe they lost it, but I REALLY can’t believe we found it. They had it back within hours.
7. The Mother of the Bride became ill and had to be emergency transported off the island, vomiting blood. I literally hijacked the governor’s helicopter off the tarmac (my police pilot friend was there waiting to fly the Guv back from a meeting with our mayor) and got the pilot to fly the MoB to a hospital on the big island. That night, the mom checked out of the hospital against medical advice and returned to Vieques. By midday the next day, she was throwing up buckets of blood and lost consciousness, and I had to have her transported via ambulance and then Medevac helicopter. She almost died. And then she turned around 24 hours later and checked out of the hospital against medical advice again, and returned to the island for the wedding. We had to tell the bride we couldn’t take any more responsibility for helping transport her if another emergency occurred. Suicide by wedding? I think not.
8. Drunken wedding guests, out of control, doing shots, and being verbally abusive to the service staff is, unfortunately, not as uncommon as you would think. We’ve had to call the police on one occasion when the very large, frightening groomsmen were stealing liquor bottles, breaking centerpieces and generally causing mayhem at a $ 4 million villa. The key is to have enough of our staff on hand with these large groups and always have a security plan ready to go on a minute’s notice. Oh yes, we all wear headsets and know what’s going on all over the wedding property at all time.
9. Three wedding guests (sorority sisters of the bride) took acid at the beginning of the wedding ceremony (we learned the sordid deets from the bride later on). By the time dinner was through, they were tripping hard! They tried to eat out of the caterer’s garbage, then stripped naked and jumped into the pool with the seven-year-old ring bearer. Once we had them out of the pool and back in the villa, they jumped up onto tabletops to dance, semi-dressed in high heels. Asked to get off the tables, one girl (can’t say “young lady” and she wasn’t mature enough to be a “woman”) jumped on my husband and attacked him like a spider monkey. The DJs had to help pull her off of him. My husband, a retired SWAT commander, was not amused. Neither were the bride or groom. Know who you are inviting before you mail those invitations or take the risk of an unpleasant surprise.
10. We planned and executed a Wiccan wedding for a lovely couple from California who didn’t tell me that they were witches until a week prior to the wedding. But I was less surprised than the traditional Jewish Mother of the Bride from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, who learned her daughter would be married by a Wiccan priest instead of a rabbi at the wedding rehearsal. From me. Shortly after that, the groom had a hysterical temper tantrum about wanting to move the wedding to a different part of the beach where he felt the “energy” was better. The elderly Mother of the Bride, to her credit, did not have a stroke right then and there, but it was a close one. Watching her old lady friends having to wash their panty-hose covered feet in the ocean to be “purified” and smudged with sage before the ceremony was absolutely priceless. Lesson of the day, find out in advance if your brides and grooms are witches and whether the guests (especially their parents) know they’ll be attending a less-than-traditional wedding.
Now I’m on a roll but it will have to wait for another time — so many more fun stories to share from so many different kinds of weddings. End of day, know as much as you can about your wedding group in advance so you can be prepared for whatever might happen during the main event.
Happy wedding planning!

Well, it’s disingenuous to claim Maya Angelou as mine, but don’t we all kinda feel that way? She sat next to me once in first class on an early-morning flight. I can’t tell you where I was going to or coming from — most likely a comedy gig. I really don’t know. All I remember with any clarity is that I was sitting next to Maya Angelou.
I had boarded early and was ensconced in the window seat selfishly hoping the one next to me would remain open. I looked up and saw Her coming down the aisle. At first I thought, “Hmm… she looks familiar.” I think this was my brain’s way of protecting me from taking in all at once the reality of who I was seeing.
Alice Walker? Cicely Tyson? And then… “It’s Her. It’s Maya Angelou!”
I stared — well, I tried not to and failed — as She walked up, stopped at the empty seat next to me, and began sitting down. I’m not schizophrenic, but the voices in my head became a screaming mob:
I took a deep breath to get my heart out of my throat and said, “Good morning.”
She said, “Good morning.”
And that simple exchange of pleasantries was all I could handle. That’s right. I get paid to essentially talk for a living and now I couldn’t. I had no words at least none on the outside. On the inside it was the Tower of Babel:
And so I sat there quietly reading my book. And by reading I mean staring at type on a page. Don’t ask me what the book was. I have no idea. All I remember is that I was sitting next to Maya Freaking Angelou. How I wish I had been reading And Still I Rise so the voices in my head could’ve debated about asking for Her autograph.
A flight attendant asked Ms. Angelou if She wanted anything to drink. Without missing a beat She said, “I’ll have a vodka and orange juice.”
The voices in my head all said, Well, damn. Is that why the caged bird sings?
And it wasn’t even 10 a.m.
As the flight got underway The Phenomenal Woman took out Her laptop and the voices said: OMG Maya Angelou has a laptop?
Of course She had a laptop. But somehow I thought She crafted Her brilliance with a feather quill and parchment. And then I thought:
Maya Angelou is gonna write a poem right here, right now, while She’s next to me! Is this really happening?
This is happening!
I had to see what She was writing. I just had to. You understand that, don’t you? And so, as nonchalantly as I could (which means not at all), I shifted my position in my seat so I could see Her computer screen from the corner of my left eye. And that’s when I saw that The Maya Angelou was playing solitaire.
You heard me. Solitaire.
And just like that she was transformed into a real person — a human being, My Maya. True, the vodka and orange juice before noon should’ve clued me in, but I’m a slow learner. I eased back into a comfortable position in my seat and the voices were quiet for the rest of the trip.
And now that My Maya has taken her final flight, her seat next to me while vacant will never be empty.
Good night, My Maya. We’ll miss you. Safe travels.

A local Fox station may have made an unfortunate slip in its coverage of Maya Angelou’s death.
On Wednesday afternoon, Twitter account @SlowSlowNews posted a screenshot which appears to show Fox 26 — a channel that serves the Houston area — telling viewers that the literary icon was canceling an upcoming appearance.
In response to the apparent faux pas, some Twitter users expressed their disdain.

Angelou died at her Winston-Salem, N.C., home Wednesday. She was 86.
