Life requires us to make assessments, literally hundreds of times a day. We assess risk level, costs, benefits, and appropriateness of behaviors in specific situations.. We make these judgment calls in our relationships too, but we sometimes forget that they are personal, subjective evaluations, and instead hold our views as being objectively , undeniably true. Taking a position in this way is a form of judgmentalism and can be hazardous to your health and to the health of your relationship. Being judgmental in a relationship can be disastrous because once we attach ourselves to a fixed characterization of someone, it becomes very difficult to see them differently. Attachment to a judgment prevents us from accepting any new information that may conflict with our views, leaving us unable to update assessments that may no longer be accurate or correct. Our friend Paul discovered that there are other hazards in being judgmental in relationships.
Paul had been self-centered, insensitive, and controlling in his relationship with his wife, Cookie. When Cookie announced that she could no longer tolerate his disrespectful attitude and behavior, he apologized, promising to mend his ways and demonstrate that he was committed to being the loving husband that he had promised to be in his wedding vows. His New Year’s resolution was to become an ideal life partner and to focus unconditionally on doing what he believed would make Cookie most happy. He also immersed himself in self-help books and CD’s. He brought Cookie flowers; and he stopped watching TV after work. He expressed interest in her life, in how she spent her days, and he stopped expecting her to wait on him. He shut off the TV and listened to her when she wanted to speak with him. He was attentive to their granddaughter when she came to visit. But no matter what he did, Cookie continued to view him through the lenses of her old, familiar perspective. It was as if she had taken a snap shot of Paul years ago, and put it in the photo album.
She couldn’t turn the page; she still had it open to the same old picture, which was the only one that she could see. Convinced that the other shoe was going to drop at any moment, Cookie laid in wait for evidence that Paul was untrustworthy and that he had shadowy motives behind his “changes.”. Since no one is perfect, Cookie easily managed to collect “evidence” that Paul was guilty of deceit and deception. She held a zero tolerance policy and she was unwilling to forgive Paul or to give him the benefit of the doubt when he slipped, even briefly into old patterns. Cookie was convinced that Paul’s past transgressions had disqualified him from any second chances. She claimed that her motto was “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”
Despite his resolution, eventually Paul began to feel like there wasn’t any point in continuing to make the effort since he felt that in Cookie’s mind he was guilty until proven innocent and her attachment to seeing him that way made the possibility of seeing his innocence remote at best. In time, it became apparent to Paul that he had no control over how Cookie viewed him. Cookie’s attachment to her judgments prevented her from appreciating the changes Paul was making. Reestablishing trust after it’s been broken takes time, and while Paul had certainly given Cookie reason to mistrust him, Cookie had played a part in the deterioration of their marriage as well. Her relentless focus on Paul’s part in the breakdown however, made it impossible for her to recognize the part that she had played, and consequently prevented her from seeing what she might do that could support Paul’s intention to repair their relationship.
When Paul eventually told Cookie that he was no longer willing to keep trying to prove his love, Cookie took this as more “proof” that he didn’t really care and had been pretending all along. Shortly thereafter, Paul made the judgment call that he was unable to persuade Cookie to see him as being sincere in his love for her. Cookie’s judgments protected her from the pain of disappointment by keeping her expectations of Paul to a minimum. Ultimately however, her attachment to them prevented them both from experiencing a satisfying and fulfilling connection together.
Cookie was not the only one in the marriage who was guilty of being judgmental. Paul had previously judged her as someone who was unworthy of receiving the kind of attention and respect that she had for years asked him to give her. He had also judged her to be in too much need of his support, particularly financial support to challenge his authority and risk jeopardizing their marriage. His attachment to these judgments prevented him from seeing that Cookie had reached a point in which she was not longer willing to remain in a relationship in which she felt disrespected and unappreciated.
Unfortunately his realizations of these changes came about too late to repair their marriage. As of our last contact with them, Paul had remarried and claimed to have learned his lesson. Cookie was single with no intention of marrying again.” I’m not bitter,” she told us. “Just clearer than I’ve ever been that I don’t need to be married to survive or even to be happy. I’m doing fine, thank you.” Still, you have to wonder.

To be successful as an artist in this day and age it is crucial that you justify your work as being contemporary. To be “contemporary” your work needs to be explained and justified in the language of postmodern theory. As works of art have evolved to require less skill in their making, artists have been become increasingly reliant on intellectual pedigrees substantiated by theory. Five hundred years ago, this wasn’t a concern.
In fact, it strikes me that without the right kind of theoretical writing to validate their work many of the great artists of the past would be in real trouble in today’s art world: can you get into an MFA program or a decent gallery without an artist’s statement? I doubt it.
An Old Master working today would definitely need some strong postmodern language to support his/her “artistic practice.” Here are some samples of the kinds of “Artist’s Statements” that I think would be required of European Old Masters if they tried to get a show in New York or Los Angeles today.
“My work explores the temporal duality of objects/non-objects in a hegemonic space/non-space. Indeed, my fruit and vegetable simulacra juxtaposes pre-Marxist male/female homo/heterosocial redactions of materiality through recurring formal concerns.”

Photographers hoping to catch a glimpse of the woman heard in the recordings of Sterling’s racist rant were stymied by the all-concealing, gigantic visor.

Gawker reports that Stiviano “has been attending hearings this week stemming from a 2012 DUI arrest (in which she was pulled over driving a red Ferrari given to her by Sterling).”

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Newspapers in the United Arab Emirates are reporting that the American drummer for the rock band Scorpions has been sentenced to one month in jail after being convicted of offensive behavior in Dubai.
The government-backed National newspaper reported Tuesday that James Kottak was convicted of insulting Islam, raising his middle finger and being under the influence of alcohol while in transit at Dubai airport. The Gulf News daily says he was arrested April 3 en route from Russia to Bahrain, where the German band was scheduled to perform at a Formula One race. Kottak was a no-show at the April 5 concert.
The newspapers say Kottak admitted to drinking but denied other charges.
The Scorpions’ manager didn’t respond to requests for comment. Kottak’s local lawyer couldn’t immediately be reached.

Stephen Colbert… as himself?
It might not be the worst thing in the world — no matter what many of us thought at first.
The initial reports confirming that the preternaturally talented Comedy Central host would be taking over David Letterman’s show — something I strongly suspected might happen but that surprised many — also included a disheartening assurance from a top CBS exec that Colbert would do The Late Show as himself, not as his bloviating, Bill O’Reilly-esque character.
“Terrible news,” I thought initially. But is it?
Two weeks later it seems that it might not be, for several reasons.
“We’ve never really seen Colbert out of character, have we?” many fellow fans said. “What will he be like?”
Actually, we have. We saw the real Colbert — different, bolder eyewear and all — visiting Letterman’s show this week, where he delivered a funny Christmas Top 10 list he wrote on spec for Letterman years ago. (It included such beverages for Santa as “Silent Nighttrain” and “Room at the Gin.”)
He was also visited by Oprah two years ago at his Charlotte, S.C., family home, where he was his Southern self. We got to meet his wife and kids for the first time.
But if you want the best demonstration of how the super-bright Colbert can more than hold his own at length without his right-wing persona, check out a YouTube video of a visit he made not long ago to Google’s New York headquarters, where he was interviewed by Google chairman Eric Schmidt in a freewheeling, hour-long conversation:
When I discussed all this recently on Norman Goldman’s national radio show, Goldman also wondered what Colbert would do as himself for an hour each night.
I told Goldman that if it was keeping the stale desk-and-couch format alive — if it meant the likes of Sandra Bullock, Penelope Cruz, Will Ferrell or Julia Roberts, etc., etc. showing up to plug their latest dismal movies — then we longtime Colbert fans would be so angry that we’d melt down CBS’ phone lines, Twitter feed, and email. You don’t turn solid gold into lead and not hear about it quickly these days, especially since there’s so little TV gold around.
OK, the desk and couch can and will probably stay, but longtime fans like me won’t tolerate a steep drop-off in quality from the peerless Colbert Report, which I think of as The Daily Show with a lot fewer dick jokes.
Colbert has a brilliant writing staff, and I hoping not only that it goes intact with him to CBS but that its material also will be used — and not just in a monologue. One also hopes Colbert will climb back into character on a regular basis. (I’m not sure even Viacom’s lawyers at Comedy Central could prevent that.)
The Colbert Report is the only show that this longtime newspaper TV critic will miss. I can’t remember even one substandard show: Colbert ranges from “just” good to superb every night.
OK, so why would Colbert drop his popular character? Two good reasons:
First, The Late Show, whatever its possible reincarnation may be, is going to remain an interview show. It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to see Colbert doing lengthier interviews with his often-offbeat, usually-interesting guests.
Also, progressive talk-show host Ron Reagan, Jr., after one of his appearances as Colbert’s guest, said something on his show the next day that seems pertinent here. “It was weird being interviewed by a character,” Reagan explained. “I’ve never done that, and there’s really no way to prepare for it.”
One can imagine how guests not as quick on their feet as Reagan would handle that situation.
Finally, a more practical reason that Colbert doing the show as himself makes sense (for him, anyway) comes from a comedian friend. “Can you imagine doing the same character for over five years?” the comic asked me. “That can’t be easy. Colbert could use a break.”

“Because Lorraine could not be attracting fights and conflict unless she was emanating that energy,” Oprah suggests.
“Yes,” Tolle nods.

The spot conveys the message that you might want to put desperate moves on hold until you’ve tried Jobbuilder.co.uk. Sadly, the employment site doesn’t exist, AdWeek pointed out. The link leads instead to a portfolio for a filmmaker who goes by the name Crobin.
And we thought there was hope for sad clowns everywhere.

Keeping up appearances sometimes requires extraordinary effort. A lot can be overlooked when someone is young, pretty, perky, and in good health. But when tragic events darken one’s days, desperate times require desperate measures.
Whether a person develops elaborate schemes to hide a secret or, stripped of his usual support system, must improvise on the spot, imagination and resilience become key factors in keeping a secret a secret.
In a joint project between the California Shakespeare Theater and Intersection for the Arts, an all-female production of Twelfth Night recently toured a wide variety of venues ranging from Intersection’s home base in the San Francisco Chronicle Building to the Alameda County Juvenile Detention Center and the Berkeley Food and Housing Project.
With an ebullient musical score composed by Peter Vitale, this production was directed by Michelle Hensley, who explained that:
“Shakespeare performed this play with a single-sex cast. All the roles were played by men. This must have increased the layers of confusion the characters felt when they fell in love with someone who turned to be the ‘wrong’ person. I wanted to find out what would happen if the cast was only women. I think the confusion is equally delightful, and highlights how each of us has a male dimension and a female dimension, no matter our gender. I love the way Twelfth Night explores how falling in love can be an escape from enormous pain. So many characters in the play find themselves ‘shipwrecked,’ facing enormous losses in their lives, and at a loss about just where to go or what to do next. Suddenly, someone wondrous and magnificent appears, someone whose love, if returned, could make all of your problems and pain vanish! Who wouldn’t jump onto such a life raft?”

Working with minimal sets and costumes in a four-sided arena arrangement of chairs that accommodated 80 people, the cast was led by Maria Candelaria as the rich and regal Olivia, Catherine Castellanos as a raucous Sir Toby Belch, and Patty Gallagher as the foolish Andrew Aguecheek. Nancy Carlin did double duty as Olivia’s steward, Malvolio, and the Duke’s servant, Valentine, while Cindy Im doubled as the shipwrecked Viola and her twin brother, Sebastian. Rounding out the cast were Rami Margron (as Duke Orsino and Olivia’s servant, Maria). Sarita Ocon appeared as both as Olivia’s jester, Feste, and Sebastian’s friend, Antonio.
While the performance was lively, quite charming, and often filled with laughs, in the interest of full disclosure, there were moments when I had trouble concentrating due to some unexpected somatic pains (the first time I’ve ever had to take a Vicodin at intermission).
My reaction to the American Conservatory Theater’s new production of Eduardo de Filippo’s 1945 play, Napoli! was muted for very different reasons. Much of the play focuses on the black market activities of Donna Amalia (Seana McKenna) in 1942 (when Naples was frequently being bombed by Allied forces and simple household staples were extremely difficult to obtain). Act II takes place 14 months later, following the liberation by Allied Forces who brought hope, joy, and an economic upturn to an exhausted population that had been battered by a brutal combination of poverty and Fascism.
With a unit set designed by Erik Flatmo, Mark Rucker directed the play’s large cast with an eye toward capturing the essential humanity underlying the financial and emotional stresses on Don Gennaro (Marco Barricelli), his family, and their neighbors.
In discussing the importance of the Neapolitan dialect to Italian audiences, the great American playwright, Thornton Wilder, described De Filippo’s writing as “forever unEnglishable.” Although a new translation by Beatrice Basso and Linda Alper premiered several years ago with this production’s debut at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, all of the translators’ intense research seems like an academic labor of love that did not produce a drama with a great deal of tension. As A.C.T.’s artistic director, Carey Perloff notes:
“The act of translation is truly a rescue mission that can bring alive a play from a distant time or culture for a new audience. De Filippo is particularly challenging to translate because his Neapolitan dialect is so pungent and particular. There is a music to his language that needs to be carried forward and re-imagined. For me, hearing this lovely new American translation is almost like hearing a new play, full of discoveries and life, but also remarkably true to its original source material.”

Unfortunately, De Filippo’s play (which is nearly 70 years old) is showing its age. One never gets the feeling that anyone or anything could threaten Donna Amalia (who has all kinds of contingency plans up her sleeve). When a neighbor reports her to the authorities for selling black-market coffee, a well-rehearsed scam (in which her husband, Don Gennaro, pretends to be dead) is quickly set into motion moments before police officer Ciappa (Gregory Wallace) arrives on the scene.
This type of charade is as old as the commedia dell’arte. Inspired by a character mentioned in Dante’s Inferno, Giacomo Puccini breathed new life into the deception with his one-act opera, Gianni Schicchi (which received its world premiere as the final act of Il Trittico at the Metropolitan Opera on December 14, 1918).
In De Filippo’s play (which was originally known as The Millionaire of Napoli) there are intricately plotted relationship problems — so carefully positioned that one can almost sit in the audience ready to give a stage manager’s cues for a specific character’s entrance.

Don Gennaro disappears between acts and is believed to be dead. His sudden, disillusioned, confused, and grimy return from the war raises all kinds of questions.
Under normal circumstances, such questions might hold the audience in the playwright’s dramatic grip. But Donna Amalia’s black market business has always been something that her husband did his best to ignore and, although it has helped her to feed her family, it has not been able to prevent her from getting a taste of her own medicine by the final curtain
Although her friend Adelaide (Sharon Lockwood) is always on hand for support, and the giggly Assunta (Lisa Kitchens) provides some comic relief as a “perhaps” widow who doesn’t know whether it’s time to stop mourning.and get on with her life, I found myself less impressed with Don Gennaro’s final attempt to heal a family which has survived on lies and deceit than I was simply underwhelmed by the entire venture.

In situations like this, it’s always valuable to ask “What did I take away from this experience?” The answer (which truly shocked me) proved that my experience was not what the playwright or director had intended. In the tiny role of Miezo Prevete, one of the Bay area’s most reliable character actors (Gabriel Marin) delivered the finest impression of Art Carney’s unforgettable Ed Norton (from The Honeymooners) I’ve ever seen.

And despite making music, playing festivals, designing, and mothering her 9-year-old son, Knowles doesn’t seem like she’ll run out of steam anytime soon.
Solange insists that she has nothing to complain about in the face of being little sister to the one-and-only Beyoncé — whose passionate work ethic impresses the pants off the 27-year-old. “I have never seen anything like it in my life, from anyone. It’s absolutely insane. Now that she’s become a mother, and the way that she’s able to balance that is so inspiring, If I am ever feeling like I want to open up my mouth and complain about how hard I am working, I think, ‘Uhhh! Sit down!’”
The “Losing You” singer also tells ASOS about what personal style surprises we can expect from her in the future. “I might be having a little evolution in my style…it’s been a lot more subtle. I had a bit of print fatigue, it’s been a part of who I am for as long as I can remember. But you want to evolve and experiment – that’s part of the fun and the joy of being a woman.”

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival day one wrapped with a combination of die-hard Carlos Santana fans one of which is festival Executive Producer Quint Davis who ended up playing maracas with the band; and The Avett Brother whose fans cleared a path as Seth Avett jumped from the stage to the crowd and jammed while strolling, in an interesting Mosesish maneuver.
Ticket prices are up to $ 70 at the gate this year, and some press coverage asked in advance how the crowds would bear up with the cost. They apparently bore up just fine. The first-day crowd that felt more like a Sunday to this local. The sandy racetrack was lined with kids making sandcastles, as always. Food lines snaked further out to the track as patrons lined up for their favorite seafood combo, as always. And THAT GUY, the one with hair that’s business in the front and party in the back as he rocks his unbuttoned vintage red bean Bayou Wear shirt and boogies through the artist entrance was there, as always.
I’ve been thinking of what it is that draw the crowds back to the festival year after year. The writer I was standing next to at the scorchingly wonderful Reubén Blades set has been coming to Jazz Fest for all its 45 years. There she was, stage-side, waving at Quint as he introduced the band. As always. And that’s what brings the crowds back. There’s not a lot of As Always to depend on these days.
Yes, there are more Coachella-styled teens with flower wreath headbands spinning along the track. Hippies may eventually give way to hipsters and it’s going to be fascinating to see where they go with Jazz Fest as it strides through middle age. But the music will still be there, no matter what turn the granddaddy of music festivals takes.
